Chris Dede, Learning Technologies, Harvard University
This session explores and illustrates the extraordinary opportunities of three types of modern immersive media for enhancing both motivation and learning. Virtual Reality (VR) provides sensory immersion, focusing on visual and audio stimuli with some haptic (touch) interfaces. Multi-user Virtual Environments (MUVE) offer an engaging Alice-in-Wonderland experience, going “through the screen” to a simulated setting in which their digital avatars convey psychological immersion in a graphical, virtual context. Mixed Reality (MR) combines real and virtual settings in various ways, to enable psychological immersion in a setting that blends physical and digital phenomena. Learn how these new technologies can be used across a range of subject areas and educational settings.
