Fundamentals of Online Teaching for Health Care Professionals

About this certificate

This six-week foundational certificate will acquaint you with essential concepts, tools, and strategies that enable you to teach more effectively in an online environment. You will complete a final assignment that challenges you to apply what you learned by developing a learning activity plan, which includes key components of an effective online course.

Who should attend?

This certificate is designed for nurse educators and other health care professionals who are new to online teaching and need an orientation to teaching in the online environment. It is ideal for anyone starting to design and teach online health care courses and for those who would benefit from a nursing credential demonstrating their accomplishment.


This certificate requires self-paced online pre-conference coursework, attendance at the DT&L Conference (including a 3-hour face-to-face certificate session from 1:15-4:15 pm on August 7), and post-conference coursework which includes the completion of a final project.

  • Create an online course project, applying principles of online education learned in this course.

Beth is a thought leader, educator, author and entrepreneur in health care education. Her teaching style is engaging, empathetic and evidence-based, emphasizing active and collaborative learning, and incorporating technology and sound pedagogical practices to promote student learning. She is a former Clinical Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and currently adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Baltimore.

Janet Staker Woerner is an online instructor and program manager for Distance Education Professional Development in the Division of Continuing Studies. Prior to joining UW-Madison, Janet served as the Business Department Chair in a higher education environment as well as a consultant/practitioner for businesses. She has taught online since 2004 for graduate and undergraduate courses, professional development certificates, and corporate training. Janet holds a master’s degree in marketing from Illinois Institute of Technology and a doctorate in education with an emphasis in technology from Walden University’s Richard W. Riley College of Education. Janet’s research stream is in the area of social media. In addition, she has been a Quality Matters Peer Reviewer since 2016.
