Director of Strategic Initiatives in the Office of Academic Innovation, University of Michigan
Rachel Niemer is the Director of Strategic Initiatives in the Office of Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan. She leads a team that helps UM instructors and administrators identify, design, and implement innovative solutions to meet the needs of pre-college, residential, and lifelong learners. She also oversees the Office of Academic Innovation’s Public Engagement team which works to prepare scholars across the university to use innovative techniques and new technologies to influence decision-makers, share and disseminate knowledge, and learn from and co-create knowledge with the University of Michigan’s publics.
Rachel is also a member of the gameful learning team which works with instructors to design engaging and motivating learning environments using motivation research, game-design principles and findings from the learning sciences. Working with instructors on redesigning traditional courses, employing simulations and developing engaging educational technologies, the gameful learning team aims to create environments that shift learners away from relying on extrinsic motivation to succeed academically, and instead, take agency over their learning.
