As the online education market in the U.S. has scaled and reached a level of maturity, there are now many millions of individuals in the workforce who hold credentials that they earned online. Once novel, degrees earned online are now mainstream. At the same time, many entirely new forms of microcredentials are being developed and offered by online education providers, including colleges and universities. Given the rapid proliferation of these new programs, how employers compare and value these new online credentials compared to traditional degrees is not well understood—the field is nascent and to date relatively little data has been available. Based on original survey research with employers, this session will explore and analyze employers’ perceptions and use of online and micro- credentials in hiring. These findings have strategic and practical implications for institutional leaders, faculty, students, and employers alike.
