2018 Staff and Contributors

Since 1985 the Distance Teaching & Learning Conference has provided a transformative professional development experience for individuals working in the field of distance and online education–from teachers to instructional designers to administrators (and everything in between). The challenge is to address this rapidly changing landscape with the most current topics, technologies, and innovations to inform best practices. The Distance Teaching & Learning team collaborates with more than two dozen advisors and committee members from campus and around the U.S. who help shape the conference program every year. Below is the 2019 list of contributors:

Distance Teaching & Learning, Continuing Studies, UW-Madison

Louise is the conference workshop chair and helps shape the overall conference program schedule. She also is captain of the information desk, assisting with presenter check-in, answering attendee questions, providing solutions to issues before they even occur, and making sure the revered candy bowl is stocked.
Wendy Fritz headshotWendy Fritz
Standing on the shoulders of the giants who came before her, Wendy is the DT&L Conference Director at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She oversees the entirety of the event: executive and other sponsorship, funding, board and committees, planning, marketing, quality, programming, logistics and sustainability in collaboration with, (and in deep appreciation for) the amazing DT&L staff, volunteers, advisors, committee members and distance education enthusiasts.
Kimary PetersonKimary Peterson
Kimary has fearlessly planned, organized, and managed the DT&L Conference for over 18 years. She’s a behind-the-scenes master of making sure everything runs smoothly, from presenter management and attendee registration to final schedule coordination and onsite logistics. During the conference she can be found running around the halls to check on set-ups and traffic flow, peering into coffee pots to see if they’re empty, and sporting a walkie-talkie as if it’s in style.
Bridget PowellBridget Powell
Bridget’s military background comes out in full force during the conference as she helps plan and coordinate the new attendee orientation, virtual conference, Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and some of our blended conference certificates. In between her many tasks, she enjoys using acronyms none of her colleagues have heard of and making the occasional funny joke.
Janet Staker WoernerJanet Staker Woerner
Janet provides excellent instruction for our Fundamentals of Online Teaching conference certificate. She enjoys interacting and engaging with all her learners and giving webinars, which often involve guest appearances by her sometimes vociferous, but always loveable dog, Abby.
Thomas TobinThomas Tobin
Thomas is the Conference Programming Chair at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he identifies trends and themes in the field of distance education; shapes the scope and focus of each year’s conference in collaboration with its advisory board and staff; finds the keynote, spotlight, and featured speakers for the conference; and hosts the conference as the emcee.
