Vance Allen joined MHE in April 2015 as the CTO and SVP Platform Engineering. Mr. Allen is responsible for software engineering, software architecture and quality assurance for MHE’s technology platform investments including Connect, ConnectED, LearnSmart, Engrade and OpenLearning. He ensures that our established platforms are reliable, secure and stable and capable of supporting the needs of our millions of learners. Mr. Allen is also charged with establishing the architecture for our shared platforms; maximizing the reusability of individual modules and components so they enable many products across multiple markets.
Prior to joining MHE, Mr. Allen was the SVP of Core Platforms at Pearson. This 350 person engineering team was responsible for all learning platform delivery for Pearson Higher Education, supporting 10’s of millions of learners and more than a billion dollars in annual revenue. Mr. Allen championed the development of reusable web services and helped drive Pearson’s transition to agile software development. He was also the engineering leader responsible for developing Pearson’s OpenClass initiative.
Mr. Allen joined Pearson through the acquisition of eCollege, where he was the CTO. As CTO he was responsible for technology strategy, development, and production hosting. eCollege was an LMS focused primarily on the for-profit space with many large public customers including Kaplan, DeVry and Bridgepoint Education. Reliability and stability were critical areas for the LMS which was also designed to serve very large student programs. Mr. Allen grew up with eCollege, starting as a software engineer in 1997 and witnessing its tremendous journey from a 16 person startup to public company to eventually supporting the $480 million Pearson acquisition.
