Rena Palloff, PhD has consulted extensively in health care, academic settings, and addiction treatment for well over 20 years. She is serving as core faculty at Capella University, teaching in the professional doctorate in Social Work as well as mentoring doctoral students, developing curriculum for the program, and has served as Lead Faculty for the program for the last three years. Additionally, she is faculty at Fielding Graduate University, in the doctoral program in Educational Leadership for Change and also in the masters’ degree program in Organizational Development and Leadership, both in the School of Leadership Studies. She designed and facilitated the New Faculty Experience (NFE) at University of the Rockies and has taught in their new School of Social, Human, and Educational Development (SoSHED). She has also served as a visiting scholar in Immaculata University’s Educational Doctorate. She previously taught classes on organizational behavior and management and leadership on an adjunct basis for the International Studies Program at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas in various sites throughout the Pacific Rim. Dr. Palloff received a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She holds a Masters Degree in Organizational Development and a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems from Fielding Graduate University. She is co-author of the 1999 Frandson Award winning book Building Learning Communities in Cyberspace: Effective Strategies for the Online Classroom (Jossey-Bass, 1999), Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom (Jossey-Bass, 2001), The Virtual Student (Jossey-Bass, 2003), Collaborating Online: Learning Together in Community (Jossey-Bass, 2005), Building Online Learning Communities: Strategies for the Virtual Classroom (Jossey-Bass, 2007, 2nd Edition of Building Learning Communities in Cyberspace), Assessing the Online Learner: Resources and Strategies for Faculty (Jossey-Bass, 2009), The Excellent Online Instructor: Strategies for Professional Development (Jossey-Bass, 2011), and Lessons from the Virtual Classroom (Jossey-Bass, 2013, 2nd Edition of Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom). The books are comprehensive guides to the development of an online environment that helps promote successful learning outcomes while building and fostering a sense of community among the learners. Building Learning Communities in Cyberspace has been translated into Portuguese and Korean. The Virtual Student and The Excellent Online Instructor have both been translated into Portuguese. Rena has been presenting this work across the United States and internationally since 1994 as well as consulting to academic institutions regarding the development of effective distance learning programs. She is the 2012 winner of the Charles Wedemeyer Award for Outstanding Practitioner in Distance Education.
