Provost and Vice Chancellor of UW-Extension
Aaron Brower, Ph.D., currently serves as Provost and Vice Chancellor of UW-Extension, a position he began on an interim basis in August of 2012 and resumed after serving as Interim Chancellor of UW COLLEGES and UW-Extension from February 2014 to December 2014.
Brower also helped create, and continues to lead, the UW FLEXIBLE OPTION, the competency-based educational program for the UW System and State of Wisconsin. UW Flex is a first-in-the-country program that provides students a way to receive degrees and certificates through competency-based and direct-assessment methods from existing public institutions. UW faculty, staff and departments provide the oversight and governance, using existing campus academic approval processes and policies, to award degrees from their UW institutions.
Prior to joining UW-Extension, Brower served six years as UW-Madison’s Vice Provost for Teaching & Learning (VPTL). As VPTL, he was responsible for guiding and supporting undergraduate education and professional development for teaching and learning – overseeing the Office of Undergraduate Advising, the Teaching Academy and the Wisconsin Institute for STEM Education & Community Engagement. Brower remains a tenured professor at UW-Madison in the School of Social Work, and in the departments of Integrated Liberal Studies and Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis.
As his curriculum vita shows, Brower’s expertise is in educational innovations, student learning and outcome assessment – engaging the whole university on issues important to students and the people of Wisconsin. Focusing on the high-school-to-college transition and issues related to college student life, Browser’s scholarship demonstrates the academic and social outcomes produced when colleges blend in- and out-of-class learning and experiences to create communities of students, faculty and staff with shared learning goals (i.e., learning communities). He has created and led many teaching and learning programs focused on integrative learning and evidence-based curricular reform with an emphasis on high-impact learning practices.
Brower earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in social work, a master’s degree in psychology, and his doctorate in social work and psychology from the University of Michigan.
